my favourite winter sport
If you follow me on Instagram, you probably know that I love to skating, whenever the weather allows it. Usually I don’t shy away from cold temperatures, however, when you choose to go inline skating, it simply needs to be DRY! Otherwise I can almost guarantee that you will slip and fall. Especially in autumn when the leaves are wet.
During winter, it’s a different story. I was born and raised in Germany and ice skating or winter sports are pretty common here. In elementary school, me and my friends used to go ice skating multiple times a week after school. That was just normal. Entry was very inexpensive and you could stay the whole day skating away indoors or outside on the large ice rink. There was music and it was just a casual fun thing to do. I have to add that I am not a particularly skilled skater, but I feel comfortable in skating just for fun and fitness. Unfortunately I can’t perform any tricks but I’m working on my backwards skate and that single leg lift 🙂 Such a good exercise.
Next to the challenge and fun factor, skating is one of the best cardio sports you can do. Unlike running, skating is gentle on your knees and poses nowhere near as much stress on your joints as running does. So it’s a win-win for me. Also, activating your tummy muscles is required to keep the balance on skates.
quality matters
I haven’t owned many pairs of skates in my life and that is because I have been very early on advised by very good skaters to not bother buying the cheap stuff, even if I don’t want to skate often. I can confidently say that there is less than a handful of skating brands that I can recommend. There are a few that are great. One of them is Head ( I own the model Head Donna), Roces and K2. Graf make those princess-y figure skating shoes made of leather and they are great but more on the pricey side. Other great brands will do the job just as well and they have passed many consumer tests in Germany. With ice skates I like to go for the white ones because why the hell not. There aren’t many opportunities to feel like a Disney princess on ice, so I might as well look like a figure skater 🙂
Here are a few suggestions, either one of those is going to last you easily an entire decade.
Important tip! Check the sizes properly! I had to buy a full size larger as ice skates aren’t exactly measured as regular shoes for some reason. Please make sure they fit! x
Very similar to the ones I have, a pretty and solid shoe with the classic wooden sole. Roces Women’s Nirvana Leisure ice skates.
For the more athletic amongst you, these one’s are easy to slip on and have a more cosy feeling. K2 Alexis Figure Blade
These are super luxurious thanks to their suede eco fur inner and outer lining. Roces Suede Eco Fur brown.
My favourite ones that I got for Christmas just this year. Couldn’t find them on a UK website but this German one should deliver abroad. Head Donna.
